LEGEND HAS IT...

Notorious Cornish pirate Captain Wilcox smuggled rum from Bridgetown, Barbados during the 19th century…

One night in 1881 his ship hit rocks off the coast of Polperro,

Cornwall and his barrels of rum floated out to sea.

He swam to shore and took shelter in the cellar of a nearby cottage for a few weeks until angry locals heard he was in the village. One stormy night, a lynch mob headed to the cottage to kill CAPTAIN WILCOX. he managed to escape through a trap door into a tunnel under the cottage. The tide came roaring in, flooded the cave and Captain Wilcox was never seen again. Local folklore says his ghost still

haunts the cave to this very day.

As for his rum… Some years later a barrel washed up in Portsmouth and was recovered by a local tavern landlord. Inspired by the flavour of the rum and markings on the barrel, he decided to start making it himself in the basement of the tavern... a secret venue exclusively for pirates.
